James Gunn has had many chances to create something other than Guardians of the Galaxy, but Peace Maker and Suicide Squad look and feel like something of his Guardians of the Galaxy style. In fact, James Gunn’s style is just that and only that: bright colors, over-the-top sarcasm, and cheeky humor. The only thing better in Guardians of the Galaxy is the costume design.
Superhero costumes are very important, as much important as the story itself. If the costume looks like someone in fashion class put it together, it drains the brain from concentrating on the movie. I truly miss the old DC camp—the ones who oversaw Nolan’s Batman, Man of Steel, and even Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam. I was not a fan of the writing or Dwayne Johnson’s overly serious acting in the movie, but the costumes looked like they came out of a DC comic.

James Gunn has been given the keys to DC’s palace, and he creates a cheap-looking, rubber suit that does not look fun to be in with a red blanket, oh and red trousers from grandpa’s drawer. The other heroes look even worse.
What’s even worse is the vibe. James Gunn went overboard on light, happy themes. There is a difference between comic realities and real-world realities. The style is like a cheapened version of Guardians of the Galaxy. The style of camera makes seriousness hard to believe. The villains don’t scream villainy. Lex Luthor is trying to be scary, but is not.
Superman is flying around outside his window, and one cannot feel any suspense from it.
This Superman reminds me of Brandon Routh’s Superman; what makes this worse is that the director, Bryan Singer, was not in charge of DC’s IP like James Gunn is.
I’m not sure James Gunn can respect Batman like Burton, Nolan, and even Reeves. He will probably give moviegoers a cheesy, over-the-top sarcastic, corny Batman with an immature kid who’s stubborn. It’ll be just like every other movie Gunn has done.
